The original icon [where Holy Mary holds Jesus] is located at the Monastery of Stavronikita at Mount Athos.
The Virgin Mary is not only a protector, but also a guide of the faithful. She is the Guide, who firmly leads the faithful to their destination, to their homeland: the kingdom of God!

Portable icon of Theotokos Hodegetria (16th century) by the hand of the hagiographer Theophanes the Cretan. The original icon is placed in the Catholikon of Stavronikita Monastery on Mount Athos.
This icon was for many years in the Catholikon of the Holy Great Monastery of Vatopedi. In 1730, however, it suddenly disappeared from its position and was found in the Monastery of Xenophontos.
